Proper Care for Braces

Caring for your mouth after being fitted with braces is very important. In fact, in many cases, an Austin dentist would agree that brushing your teeth becomes even more pertinent after this equipment is placed in the mouth. There are several things that you can do to protect the braces and your teeth during this time.

Brush, Brush, Brush! Use a soft toothbrush to gently clean around the braces and scrub the surfaces of your teeth that are exposed. Though you should be thorough, you will have difficulty getting to every open area with a traditional toothbrush. care for braces For that reason, the orthodontist should have provided you with an angled brush that can be worked beneath the wires and between the braces to clean them more entirely. Use careful attention to clean both sides of each brace. Food and plaque that builds up here can result in decay, infection, or worse. Most dental professionals agree that patients with braces should brush half an hour after each meal or snack. You might also consider the regular use of a fluoride mouthwash or salt water rinse to get rid of lingering food particles. You might find that your dentist is a very big proponent of drinking water throughout the day because this helps rinse the mouth as well.

Floss Floss regularly, but be careful not to tug on the string. Being too forceful when flossing with braces is dangerous; you could hit, bend, or even break a wire. Be gentle while working the string between each pair of teeth.

Special Diet For the most part, you can continue with your normal diet while wearing braces. There are, however, certain foods that you will want to avoid. Those that are hard to bite, such as apples or pears, difficult to chew like taffy, or foods likely to get lodged in the braces (i.e. corn on the cob, popcorn) are not recommended. You should also avoid chewing gum.

Being Active with Braces Go for it! There is no reason that braces should hold you back from your favorite hobbies. However, it is wise to consider a mouth guard when playing sports or participating in other events that have the risk of a blow to the mouth. If you have difficulty finding a mouth guard that fits well, speak with your dentist about having one custom made.

Retainers Brush your retainer every time you brush your teeth. Soak it in denture cleanser at least once each week. Rinse with plain water after soaking and before placing it back in your mouth.

Addressing Complications with the Equipment There are certainly situations that may arise while wearing braces that will call for quick action. Here are a few rules to live by. Loose brackets can be temporarily fixed with orthodontic wax until you can see the dentist. The same is true of a broken wire. You can use tweezers, toothbrush, or eraser end of a pencil to move the wire so that it does not harm the soft tissue in your mouth. Finally, if you have a loose band, save it and schedule an appointment to have it replaced.

Could Your Skin Problems be Tied to Your Weight?

The body undergoes many changes when it is forced to support large deposits of heavy fat day and night. So, it might not come as a surprise to many individuals that a lot of the same people who go to Austin spas in search of information about the HcG diet are often the same individuals who face serious skin issues. If you have seen a lot of unfavorable changes in your skin recently and you are carrying more weight than you should be, then it very well could be that the excess pounds are to blame.

There are a number of skin conditions that can present in obese individuals, which occur for a variety of reasons. Fluctuations in hormones, skin being stretched to allow for the new areas of fat, and even undue pressure on veins and capillaries can all showcase on the surface.

Perhaps one of the most common skin-related complaints of obese patients is a condition known as Acanthosis Nigricans. This appears as areas of darkly pigmented, thick skin. As a result of the skin thickening, these areas can appear to be cracked or folded as well. This can occur in people of any age and in rare instances is a sign of a more serious, underlying condition, but is more typically a result of hormone fluctuations in the body. People that are overweight or obese, however, are at the greatest risk of this skin problem. It will commonly be seen around the neck, armpits, and groin, however it can also occur on the face, thighs, elbows, and knees, among other areas of the body. Microdermabrasion, laser- and photofacial treatments have been successful at reducing the appearance of the condition.

Another common problem for people who are overweight is capillaritis, which showcases as red patches on the skin. It is a result of superficial capillaries that burst beneath the skin. This problem can last a lifetime with random flares. Again, the signs of this problem can be tackled by a few of the services offered at a local laser spa.

More serious problems can arise when bacteria attacks the body. Again, most commonly seen in people who are overweight or obese, cellulitis is a very unattractive skin condition that can result in swelling and redness on the surface of the skin. The difference with this condition is that it is caused by bacteria, which can also affect the body in other ways, causing fever or chills in many cases. If left untreated, it can cause abscesses on the skin and the bacteria can infect the bloodstream. Those who are obese, have been diagnosed with diabetes or have poor circulation are at the highest risk, but there are other health factors that can cause an increased risk as well. This skin condition should be treated by a medical doctor right away to prevent further complications.

These are just a few of the ways that your skin can react to carrying excess weight each and every day. The very best things that you can do for yourself and your skin is lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

What You Should Know About Type 1 Diabetes

What You Should Know About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes Defined

This less common form of diabetes is a result of an autoimmune deficiency. The body sees its own cells as potential threats and attacks the pancreatic cells, which are supposed to release insulin after a person ingests food or beverages. The insulin plays the important role of delivering the nutrients from the blood stream to the cells that are in need of the energy. However, type 1 diabetes kills the insulin-releasing cells and as a result sugar becomes trapped in the blood. The cells that would normally receive the energy boost are deprived, which sends the body into a starvation-like mode. Stored energy reserves are opened up, flooding the already saturated blood with more glucose, which still cannot be used because there is no insulin to transport it.

Causes

The actual cause of this condition is not entirely understood. It is believed that an environmental factor is at play, such as a toxin or virus, that fools the body into believing the pancreatic cells are threatening. However, that has not been confirmed.

Treatment

Due, in part, to the fact that the cause of the problem is not truly know, doctors and scientists have been unsuccessful in finding a true cure for type 1 diabetes. However, a lot is known today about how to control the issue, so blood sugar levels do not get out of hand. Insulin therapy is used in conjunction with an altered diet and lifestyle. There is also need for regular monitoring of glucose levels and also frequent medical exams to ensure the body is responding properly.

Potential Side Effects and Complications

Initially, the symptoms of this disease are minor and may be confused for other issues. They can include increased thirst and hunger, dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, abdominal pain, and frequent urination. Because the glucose goes unused by the cells and the energy stores are used, a person can lose a rather impressive amount of weight quite quickly despite an increased appetite. The unused glucose is passed as waste in the form of urine, which explains the frequent trips to the bathroom.

In emergency situations, the body can respond very badly to the huge amount of glucose traveling through the arteries and vessels. This can lead to sudden loss of consciousness, dizziness, confusion, uncontrollable shaking, or vomiting.

Eventually, if left untreated or not properly managed, this condition can lead to other severe problems, such as kidney damage, poor circulation, and disrupted vision.

Diabetic Retinopathy

The latter side effect is often a result of the onset of diabetic retinopathy. This eye disease occurs because of the increased pressure placed on the tiny vessels at the back of the eye. As the glucose clogs them, they can weaken and break, leaking blood into the retina and macula. Sometimes, new and abnormal vessels grow as well. These are unstable and can result in further blood pooling. Over time, this condition can cause serious vision loss or even blindness, which cannot be repaired. Diabetics should have frequent visits with an Austin opthamologist to ensure that retinopathy is caught early, as it is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in this country.

Photofacials and Juvederm: How Cosmetic Surgery Has Advanced

Have you ever done any research into what life was like a number of years ago for people? Our ancestors were raised very differently than we’ve been raised, and they experienced a wide range of different things. A man who had a toothache would likely head right to the barber’s shop. Why would he go there? Because the barber was also the town’s doctor and their dentist! But life has changed and now science has advanced to the point where it isn’t necessary to go to your barber’s or hair stylists to get your medical problem diagnosed. And if you visit a Pflugerville Med Spa, you’ll find that there are many thing that you can have done cosmetically that can help you to look, and feel, better that you may have never heard of before.

Juvederm

Take Juvederm. Have you ever heard of this type of procedure or medication before? Those who aren’t invested in the way that cosmetic surgery works, and who don’t follow along with cosmetic surgery news will likely not have heard of Juvederm. This type of product is actually a revolutionary product that is beautifully designed to help someone who is trying to get their face to look the way that they want it to look. If you have acne scars, or deep lines on your face, then you may want to look into Juvederm in Round Rock.

Juvederm is actually a filler. This filler is injected into the skin, under the top layers and over the muscle, to fill out the skin. When the filler is added into the skin, fine lines completely disappear and deep lines tend to fade a great amount. It’s an amazing way to help you to make your face look younger, and many prefer it to Botox treatments because it tends to last a long time and to be able to get rid of things that Botox simply can’t do anything about.

Photofacial

There are many different treatments that you can get at a medical spa, including a Photofacial. This is another newer type of procedure that many people don’t know about. This procedure is perfect for people who have skin on their face that is not the color that it should be. Those who have conditions like rosacea, or scars from acne, or brown or red spots on the skin due to sun damage will find that this type of procedure can help them to even out the tone of their face, giving them a great complexion once again.

There are a large number of procedures that you can get done at a medical spa, including things like spider vein removal. Now you can find Round Rock spider vein removal very easily, when, even ten years ago, you had to go to a surgeon to have the procedure done. There are many things that you can get done at a medical spa now, thanks to how technology has advanced in the last hundred years.

Putting on the Glam

Do you still think a trip to the beauty salon is a once a month necessity…a time to get your hair trimmed and maybe splurge on a manicure? Does the phrase “beauty salon” conjure up the old standard neighborhood shop, with a tired league of middle-aged women collapsing in chairs waiting for their standing appointments?

You probably also think that Austin, Texas is still a little cow town on the banks of the Colorado. Well wake up, baby, those days are over. Austin, Texas is quickly taking over the lead in the race for beauty domination in the U.S. It is bringing all the class and glitz of the New York salon to the heart of the Southwest. Anything you can get on Fifth Avenue, you can now enjoy deep in the heart of Texas.

Beauty salons are now the sanctuary of the young, trendy, upwardly mobile professionals—male and female alike! No longer is this a strictly female domain; men, too, have discovered the many benefits of spending a day in the salon. Not only do they have their hair styled, and their nails manicured…they have plunged, head first, into the decadent world of spa treatments—we’re talking a full slate of world-class services that include nationally-acclaimed airbrush tanning techniques, hair removal options that address every possible follicle on your body, and a bevy of facial treatments that have put Austin, Texas on the map as a beauty treatment destination.

So what’s changed? Well, the old standbys are still available, haircuts, colors, perms…but good beauty salons now bring pampering to a magnificent new level. Almost any amenity that brings total relaxation and transformation to mind is available at your doorstep.

If you’re planning a winter vacation to get away from the cold and the crowds, there’s no need to show up looking like Moby Dick. Deeply-tanned skin looks fabulous against an elegant white dress or classic silk shirt, but long hours spent lying in the sun or baking in a tanning booth can have disastrous implications for your skin. Let the salon staff artists provide a meticulous airbrush tan before you board your jet. They’ll provide a perfect balance of natural-looking color and all-over coverage that will have people thinking you’re just returning from the Caribbean or St. Tropez.

If you’re headed to the beach, whether at home or abroad, get your body swimsuit ready by scheduling time for a bikini wax, or other hair removal service. You guys that have been wearing fur coats under your suits all this time will be amazed at how liberating it is to be hair-free; not only will you feel more comfortable, but it will probably mean more favorable attention every time you doff your shirt, too.

But wait, spending time on the beach—even at night—can leave your skin feeling dry and abused. Treating yourself to one of the many facial delights available at your favorite salon will leave you relaxed, invigorated, and ready to face the world. You can even turn back time with one of the more intense treatments like microdermabrasion in Austin TX. Microdermabrasion treatments will help you shed the damage done by the elements you expose your skin to daily (like wind, sun, and dust) and leave you with smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin.

So that’s it…that’s all there is! All that’s left to say is, “Move over New York…Austin, Texas is making its move to become the beauty capitol of the U.S…and just maybe—the world!”

Find the Right Spa Professionals and Avoid Scams

No matter where you live, you run into weather and conditions that affect your skin and hair: those in the northeast have cold, dry winters that suck the hydration right out of their skin, those in sunny climates have to contend with damaging UV rays, and those in Austin deal with hot sun and humid air nearly year round. It is no wonder that medical spas have become so popular! We all understand the need to take care of our skin and body, and these spas offer effective – and often relaxing – ways to do this. Finding the right med spa is essential. How do you know if you’ve found the one to trust with your skin?

Whether you get facials every few months or you would like to lose weight naturally, it is crucial that you seek the help of professionals. Med spas are run under the supervision of a physician. In Texas, licensed health professionals are allowed to inject Botox, for instance, but it must be done under the doctor’s supervision. Some clinics are “med” spas in name only, and the doctor is rarely, if ever, on site. When you are choosing a spa, make sure you know who will be doing your treatments. Nurses and trained technicians can be wonderful, but you want to ensure you are being seen by someone with the right training and experience.

Unfortunately, as with all businesses, there are spas that purport to be medical but, in fact, are not run under the supervision of a doctor. These may be run out of a hotel or other non-permanent location or they may offer to come to you. This is not for your convenience – it is because not being tied to a location makes it easier for them to move on when people complain. Offers of cheap botox and other cut-rate services are too good to be true. You really need a trained professional to handle these treatments. It is best to choose a med spa that is in or adjacent to a medical clinic. Some doctors may open storefront offices, so always make sure you check credentials. Reputable businesses will not mind in the least.

You can also do some preliminary research on the spa you are considering. Go online and either Google “Austin, Texas medical spa reviews” or the name of the specific spa. You will find sites such as Yelp, Austin.CitySearch, Austin.SalonSeeker, and local.yahoo that feature consumer reviews. These can be tremendously helpful in making your decision. Of course, someone may be displeased that after one or two laser hair removal treatments, they still needed to shave their legs, so you have to weigh information carefully. Know about the procedures, have realistic expectations, and find the reviews from people who do likewise.

Whether you are going in to the spa for a chemical peel or a simple application of Glow Minerals in
Austin, TX
, and elsewhere in the country, make sure you are putting your appearance and your health in good hands.

Why Word Of Mouth Is Good For Automobile Repair Shops

When you need auto repair, you want to make sure you have the best automobile repair shop at your service with the best possible pricing. Regardless of what might be wrong with your car- a dragging muffler, an air conditioning unit that does not blow cold air, or if you just need your car to be inspected for potential problems, you want your car to be in trustworthy hands. After all, a car is a large investment of your money, time, effort, and can be crucial to getting to a job.

When you need Austin Transmission Repair in Austin, look for an auto mechanic that has been highly touted by word of mouth. Avoid auto shops that have been constantly criticized, as bad service, like bad news, quickly gets around. If you choose an auto repair shop that is a family service or has been around a while, you are more likely to have a good customer service than part of a larger commercial chain. A smaller business depends more on the return service of customers, and so need to do a better job, be more pleasant to work with, and depends more on the word of mouth from their customers to gain new customers.

If your muffler seems to be having a problem, look for a good muffler service in Austin. A good auto mechanic should be able to provide your car with the service it needs to repair the muffler back into useable, if not almost new, condition. For instance, if your muffler is dragging on the road and causing sparks to fly, you might want to have auto repair done. If your muffler is letting out black smoke or more smog than usual, you should have it checked for its smog emissions. If the emissions are higher than the state allows, your car will not pass state inspection, and so you will need to get it repaired. It is better to get your muffler fixed now rather than later, as it not only helps your car, it also protects the environment.

Other automobile repair shops can do body work if your car has been damaged in a wreck, can rotate tires, or service the engine when it needs to be serviced. Do not forget to have your Freon levels checked, so that you know your air conditioner should be working all right. Make sure the engine battery is charged, and that all the fluids are at the level they should be. Even oil needs to be changed every once in a while with the filter so that your car runs smoothly.

An automobile repair shop in Austin should be able to help you get your car running the best it can, so that you know it has a long life ahead of it and that your investment is sound. Listen to what your friends and family say about nearby auto repair shops, and see what the customer reviews are. Soon you should be able to find a good automobile repair shop and have your car serviced in no time.

Finding the Best Eye Doctor or Surgeon in Austin

People often ask where they should go when they have trouble with their vision. That is a good question, but a better question is where you should go for your regular eye exams. Where should you go when your eyes are feeling fine and your vision is unchanged? This is when having a great opthamologist is really important. This is when diseases and conditions of the eye can be detected and, hopefully, halted before they begin to present symptoms. A specialist is important, there is no question, but don’t neglect routine eye exams either.

Whether you are interested in an eye exam or need to discuss LASIK surgery with a specialist, it is clear that you need a great doctor. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the eye. The advantage here is that your doctor can diagnose and treat eye diseases. You can also opt to see an optometrist, who is a doctor of optometry (OD). He/she has received four years of post-graduate education in optometry and is trained to exam eyes, detect diseases like glaucoma, retinal detachment, and cataracts, and perform certain treatments. The difference is that he/she cannot treat all diseases.

If you find a good optometrist, you’ll be in good hands for your regular exams. If he should spot a signal of a condition for which he is not trained, you will likely be referred to an ophthalmologist, retinal specialist, or other expert.

When choosing your eye care professional, here are some factors to keep in mind:

Experience and training. Many people do not check on the credentials of their health care professionals, but this is really a basic step to take before you trust someone with your eyesight and health. Makes sure the doctor, whether MD or OD, has the most up-to-date training. The best way to find this out? Ask.

Make sure he has experience in the field in which you need assistance. For instance, if you have glaucoma, you may want the most aggressive treatment that only a specialist can provide. In Austin, cataract surgery, Lasik, retinopathy surgery, and treatments for glaucoma, macular degeneration, and a variety of other complex conditions are practiced widely, ensuring that you can find the right fit for your needs.

Services. What can the ophthalmologist or optometrist do for you? As mentioned, if you need regular exams and a prescription for glasses, visiting an experienced, skilled OD is great. But if you require more specific care, getting a referral to someone like a a retinal specialist who has a narrower field of expertise will be beneficial.

Patient recommendations. Ask friends or family members who they see. Visit doctor review sites and read up on your doctor. In a city the size of Austin, you will likely be able to find the information you need online. Look on sites like Yelp, RateMDs, and Vitals.com.

The best time to see an eye doctor is before you think you need to. When you find the right doctor, make sure you make that annual appointment.

Should You Take Your Child to a Pediatric Dentist?

The average person does not realize that not all dentists are alike. When you think about doctors, you know that there are many different types of doctors, who specialize in all sorts of different things. You wouldn’t think of taking your two year old to a geriatric doctor, for instance, but know that there is a family practitioner or a pediatrician that would be better suited to treat them. The same holds true for dentists. While most dentists are trained in general dentistry, there are pediatric dentists as well. But should you take your child to a pediatric dentist or trust your general dentist?

A Pediatric Dentist

If you look at the definition of what a pediatric dentist is according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, also known as the AAPD, a pediatric dentist is defined as being a type of dentistry that “focuses on the oral health and unique needs of young people, including infants, children, and adolescents.” This means that they are specifically trained to work with youngsters on keeping their teeth beautiful and healthy. But how is their training different from some other type of dentist?

A pediatric dentist generally has to have a number of years of specialty training following their time in dental school. This training prepares them to treat young children and to learn how to take care of the fragile teeth that are in a youngster’s mouth. They understand the growth of teeth better than general dentists and they are often best able to determine what type of treatment is the perfect treatment for your child.

What Should You Choose?

One thing to think about when you’re trying to choose between a general dentist and a pediatric dentist is the type of treatment that you want your child to have. Say, for instance, that you were going to be selecting a dentist for yourself in Austin. Teeth whitening was something that you knew that you wanted, which means that you should make sure that you select a dentist who is trained in teeth whitening.

Children’s teeth have specific needs as well, which is why many parents look to getting a pediatric dentist in Austin. Invisalign is something that you may also want to think about when you’re thinking of selecting a dentist for your child, especially if you know that they are going to have problems with crowding as they grow older (it’s often easy to tell when they’re fairly young and their adult teeth start growing in). If you know that your child will likely need special care, then it’s a good idea to select a dentist who is able to point you in the right direction for the best oral care in your area, including one who knows which person in your location works with Invisalign, as it is one of the least painful and most comfortable ways to have your teeth straightened. The choice as to whether or not to choose a pediatric dentist is up to you, but make sure you survey your options before you pick just one.
